Adani corruption charges: Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani targets Congress while defending Gautam Adani
Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani on Wednesday said that the US indictment against Gautam Adani only has claims and the charges have not been proven.

He also attacked the Congress party, asking it to produce evidence before holding press conferences to launch attacks against Adani.

"This is clearly a political tool. They have just had a rout in the Maharashtra elections. They've been successful winners in coalition on the coattails of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha but Maharashtra was a prize which they were very confident of winning. This is a completely divergent tactic," said Jethmalani.

"They have no other issues. You will see that constantly the Congress Party in particular and the INDI alliance sometimes harp on only two issues in which there is foreign meddling. One is Adani and the other is Manipur. These are both issues which they should stay away from. I regret to say that it is not in the country's interest to keep promoting these and playing with fire," he added.

Former Attorney General and Senior Counsel Mukul Rohatgi on Wednesday said that there are five Counts in the US indictment mentioning Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, but the names are present in three Counts.

He said, "Count 1 and count 5 are more important than the others but in neither are Adani and his nephew charged. Count 1 is against certain other persons minus the two Adanis."

Earlier in the day, Adani Renewables had released a filing saying Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and senior executive Vneet Jaain are clear of all bribery charges as per the US Department of Justice, but added that there are three charges of indictment.

In an exchange filing, AGEL has said that news published by various media houses on the bribery and corruption
charges against Adani Officials is ‘incorrect’. The reports, which suggested that key Adani executives—Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and senior director Vneet Jaain—were facing bribery and corruption charges under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), have been refuted by the company. The Adani Group emphasised that while the executives are facing charges related to securities and wire fraud, no allegations of bribery or foreign corruption have been made against them.
