6 killed and several injured in Manipur violence

Two people were killed and at least four injured in an attack by armed groups in Thamnapokpi, Manipur's Bishnupur district, on Thursday, police sources said. The bodies of two persons were recovered in Churachandpur district. Two others succumbed to their injuries received on Wednesday evening.

According to police sources, heavy gunbattle has been reported from the border areas of Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts over the past three days.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, several people have received bullet and splinter injuries. Additional security forces have been rushed to Naranseina Maning Leikai under Moirang police station. Sources said LS Mangboi, who had received bomb splinter injuries on his head in Wednesday's violence, died on way to Guwahati via Mizoram. "One more injured person, Hemkholun, has succumbed to the bomb splinter injuries. He was undergoing treatment at the Churachandpur district hospital," they said.


Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum called for an emergency shutdown in Churachandpur on Thursday in view of the continued gunfire between armed groups.

Police conducted search operations in Kangpokpi, Thoubal, Churachandpur and Imphal-West districts and recovered 5 arms, 31 ammunition, 19 explosives and 3 packs of IED material. 1,646 persons have been detained in connection with various violations.
