Assam ground stated that around 53 alleged jihadis are arrested in Assam. The state government in the state assembly stated that there is not a single police encounter in the state but suspected criminals killed or injured in police firing when they tried to escape from the police net.

Parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika, replying on behalf of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma who holds the Home portfolio, said there have been 26 instances of clashes between police personnel and criminals and militants in the last two years, which resulted in death of 30 while 12 others injured.

He said that nine cases of alleged activities by fundamentalist elements have been registered in the state since March 2022. A case is investigated by the NIA.

The cases were registered in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Tamulpur and Nalbari districts.

In December last year a PIL was filed in Gauhati High Court alleging fake encounter or extra judicial killing in Assam. The government in its latest updated affidavit stated 171 incidents of police firings and four custodial deaths.
