Amid Military-Chin state forces clashes: 500 cross over from Myanmar to Mizoram

The chief minister of Myanmar’s Chin state, Salai Lian Luai, has taken shelter in Mizoram earlier along with 24 lawmakers following the military coup in the neighbouring nation on February 1. Chin shares its Western border with Mizoram.

The official added that in some areas makeshift camps made of bamboo have been set up house the refugees. Non-governmental organisations have also arranged to provide relief to the refugees.
More than 500 people from Myanmar recently crossed over to Mizoram amid intensified fighting between the country’s military and Chin Defense Forces, a senior official in the state government told ET.

The chief minister of Myanmar’s Chin state, Salai Lian Luai, has taken shelter in Mizoram earlier along with 24 lawmakers following the military coup in the neighbouring nation on February 1. Chin shares its Western border with Mizoram.

“On June 10, gunfire started between the Myanmar army and the Chin Defense Forces and this triggered an exodus of people. Over 500 people came to Mizoram side and over 280 people have camped on the banks of the River Tiau,” the official said.


The official added that in some areas makeshift camps made of bamboo have been set up house the refugees. Non-governmental organisations have also arranged to provide relief to the refugees.

Myanmar is under a one-year state of emergency after Senior General Min Aung Hlaing took power. The military junta has detained the country's elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and members of her government.
