4th extension for UP SIR; final roll date now April 10

New Delhi: Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday said the final electoral roll in Uttar Pradesh under special intensive revision will now be published on April 10, instead of March 6, extending the process for the fourth time.

The final rolls of all other SIR phase II states will be published on February 14.

Uttar Pradesh was to complete the process of filing claims and objections regarding the voters' list on February 6, but the deadline now stands extended to March 6.


Notices, as per the latest ECI directions, will be sent out until March 27, following which the final roll will be published by April 10.

ECI has cited requests from the state's chief electoral officer for the extension besides "other relevant factors" for yet another revision of the SIR schedule.

The draft roll of Uttar Pradesh had sparked a debate over 2.89 crore deletions - taking the roll down from 15.44 crore to 12.55 crore. Another 3 crore-plus electors had been identified for the issuance of notices. These are people who could lose a mention in the final roll if they fail to appear for hearings or do not provide the required documents of eligibility.

In all, 6.5 crore deletions have been carried out across a dozen states and Union Territories undergoing phase II of SIR - 43% of them in Uttar Pradesh alone.
