4 killed in Meghalaya's Garo Hills in landslides triggered by heavy rains

India's Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday due to heavy rain in isolated areas.

At least four people, including three members of one family, were killed in a landslide in western Meghalaya's Garo hills region on Thursday as relentless rains and high winds wreaked havoc.

A landslide sparked by heavy rains killed three members of a family in Gambegre block in West Garo Hills, according to officials with the state disaster management agency. All three survivors were transferred to a nearby hospital.

After two landslides killed four people on Thursday, Meghalaya's chief minister Conrad K Sangma is expected to visit the Garo Hills area.


There was a second landslide at Samati village in the South West Garo Hills, which is thought to have killed a two and a half year old child.
