After a video of two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted before the public in May went viral, official sources from Imphal said four people have been arrested till now. While Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to Manipur CM NBiren Singh over the viral video, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognisance of the incident and the chief ministers of neighbouring states have expressed dismay over the incident.

Singh said culprits deserve a “capital punishment”. One of the arrested has been identified as Huirem Herodas Meitei from Pechi Awang Leikai. Thousands of people organised a protest march in Churachandpur demanding action against the perpetrators and a separate administration.

Tension is running high in the hill districts. Mizoram CM Zoramthanga tweeted: “My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking suo-motu cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning.”

Zoramthanga tweeted: “Brutal violence in Manipur not only affects the neighbouring state but the whole country. Situations seem to have worsened!”

Nagaland CM N Rio tweeted, “The incident in Manipur is barbaric and shameful… We are deeply pained by the series of incidents that have been happening in Manipur… We must all collectively strive for peace.”

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma condemned the incident and sought punishment for the perpetrators. TWITTER TOLD TO TAKE DOWN VIDEO The Centre has asked Twitter to take down the video.

The IT ministry asked other social media platforms to remove the video. NCW, too, directed the head, Public Policy at @TwitterIndia, to remove the video. “This video compromises the victims’ identities and is apunishable offense,” it said.
