30 hurt as youth clash with police in Manipur

Around 34 students were injured on Tuesday in Imphal when security forces used tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the students protesting the killing of two students by unidentified armed assailants.

A large number of students took to streets and were marching towards chief minister Biren Singh's bungalow when the police tried to stop them leading to clashes.

The injured students were admitted to various hospitals of Imphal for treatment. As a precautionary measure, schools across the state will be closed on Wednesday and Friday.


The students started protesting after photographs of the two missing students' bodies went viral on social media on Monday. 17-years old female student Hijam Linthoingambi and 20-year-old boy Phijam Hemjit had gone missing on July 6 during the peak of ethnic violence in Manipur and the victims' families suspected that they had been killed by the armed assailants.

A statement from the chief minister's office on Monday said that the Manipur government has assured that the state police, in collaboration with the central security agencies, are actively investigating the case to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of two students and to identify the perpetrators who murdered them.
