30 dead in Manipur violence: security advisor

Manipur government's newly appointed security advisor Kuldiep Singh said that there have been around 20 to 30 deaths in the series of ethnic violence in different districts of Manipur since May 3.

He said, "There are 28-30 death cases. We are further verifying."

He added, "Around 84 arms surrendered and 10 people arrested today. On Thursday, there was a skirmish. Army column had to open fire. Three bodies were found."


Army and Assam Rifles on Saturday undertook aerial Surveillance, UAV and enhanced vigil in Manipur along Indo Myanmar Border to keep eye on Manipur Valley Based Insurgent Groups staying in camps across Indo Myanmar Border.

Large scale violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, Singh a former CRPF Chief, said that at least 18 to 20 people were killed in the series of ethnic violence in different districts of Manipur however we need to verify it . "Over 100 people were injured in these countless attacks. Over 500 houses, a large number of vehicles, shops and other properties were either burnt down or damaged in these attacks, arson, vandalism since May 3," Singh, a retired IPS officer, told the media in Imphal.

He said that around 23 police stations in different districts were identified as most vulnerable and the Army and Central Armed Police Forces were adequately deployed in these areas.

Unconfirmed reports have put the death toll at 50 to 55 people. Police said that over 25,000 affected people of different communities have been evacuated and sheltered in safer places.

Defence sources said that ongoing Crisis in Manipur may lead to a new Security dimension as Manipur Valley Based Insurgent Groups staying in camps across Indo Myanmar Border may be detrimental to ongoing massive efforts to restore normalcy in Manipur.
