3 more arrested in Jadavpur University death

Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested three more students of Jadavpur University in connection with the death of a first-year undergraduate student allegedly triggered by ragging even as the university sent its second report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the issue.

The trio was arrested after incoherency was found in their statements in earlier questioning, police sources said. They were produced at a local court and were remanded to police custody.

With this, total arrests in connection with the case have gone up to 12, including former and present students.


The fresher fell to his death from the university boys' hostel near the campus in the early hours of August 10.

Jadavpur University has sent an exhaustive report with a detailed information in response to queries raised by the UGC regarding alleged ragging of the fresher, backed by documentary evidence, university registrar Snehamanju Basu said on Saturday.

"I have sent a report to the UGC replying to their 12 queries... Initially, we had relied on their two queries. I have sent 31 files yesterday and replied to the queries," Basu said.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP), student wing of the ruling party, protested inside Jadavpur campus with CCTV cameras in their hands, demanding immediate installation of CCTV cameras and submitted deputation.
