Guwahati: Three people were killed and five others shot at in Khujuma Tabi village in Manipur's Bishnupur district when armed miscreants attacked in the early hours of Sunday.

A senior police officer, who does not want to be named, told ET, "People were killed while they were guarding the village in view of the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Armed miscreants attacked and these people died on the spot. Some of the people were sleeping after their turn of guarding was over."

He added five villagers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Security personnel have rushed to the areas and launched a combing operation to nab the militants. The miscreants took away two arms. The villagers are planning to bring the dead bodies to Imphal. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited Khujuma Tabi village.
