2025: Extra local trains, metro and buses to manage Mumbai New Year crowd

As Mumbai gears up to welcome 2026, the city’s transport authorities have announced special arrangements to ensure smooth travel for commuters on New Year’s Eve. Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Metro, and BEST buses will operate additional services overnight, providing safe and convenient options for passengers attending celebrations across the city and its suburbs.

Western Railway special trains on New Year’s Eve

Western Railway will operate eight extra special local trains on the night of December 31, 2025, to facilitate travel for commuters celebrating New Year’s Eve. Four trains will run from Churchgate to Virar, and four from Virar to Churchgate. Services will start after 12:15 am and continue until around 5:00 am.

Western Railway CRPO Vineet Abhishek told ANI, “A lot of our commuters will be travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve. Keeping that in mind, Western Railway will be running some extra special trains throughout the night. An extra number of staff would be deputed from GRP and RPF, as well as ticket-checking staff to ensure smooth operations.”

Central Railway special services

Central Railway will operate four special suburban trains on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kalyan on the Main Line and Panvel on the Harbour Line. Services will depart at 1:30 am and return at the same time, with arrivals at 3:00 am on the Main Line and 2:50 am on the Harbour Line.

Mumbai Metro extended service

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation will run extended services on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) from 10:30 pm on December 31 until 5:55 am on January 1. The line connects Colaba to Aarey JVLR via Bandra-Kurla Complex, covering 27 stations along the 33.5 km corridor. Regular metro services will resume at 5:55 am.

BEST special buses

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will operate special buses connecting popular beaches from 10 pm to 12:30 am. Heritage tour buses will also run in South Mumbai from 5:30 pm until early morning to accommodate New Year’s Eve celebrations.
