Kolkata: Two elderly women have been arrested in North Dinajpur district's Kaliaganj by BSF for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border. They have been handed over to the police and remanded to 14-day custody. This is the second arrest after a minor girl entered through the Chopra border in North Bengal.

Kaliaganj police produced the women at Raiganj district court on charges of illegal infiltration into India. Sources said Ado Barman (90) was from Thakurgaon district and Kanju Bala (74) was from Dinajpur district in Bangladesh.

Kanju Bala narrated a horrific tale of how minority women are being tortured in Bangladesh and that she entered India out of fear of torture. Kanju Bala said: "There is severe persecution there. Our house has been destroyed. We have no place to stay. That's why I came here. My family lives here."

Ado Barman's son, Surendra Barman, had migrated to India in 1999, and now resides in Mithabari in Hemtabad area. Surendra had asked his elderly mother to leave Bangladesh due to the violence and threats. Surendra Barman pleaded: "My mother is a very elderly woman. I want her to spend her last days with me. We were horrified about the ongoing persecution of minorities in Bangladesh."
