19 dead in Nagaland after consuming spurious liquor

Guwahati: At least 19 people have died in Nagaland’s Mokokchung and Tuensang districts over the last two days after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.

Police said they have arrested 19 people in connection with the deaths. Eight of the deaths were reported in Mokokchung and 11 in Tuensang. Earlier this month, at least nine people died in the state after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.

Although Nagaland was declared a dry state in 1990, illegal sale and consumption of liquor in the state continue.

According to a police official, a special investigation team (SIT), headed by additional superintendent of police

Bunglang Chang, has been constituted to investigate the deaths and trace the source of the suspected adulterated liquor.

Authorities have also sent samples of the liquor to Guwahati for forensic examination to ascertain the cause of the deaths. Police have also seized nearly 3,000 bottles of liquor.
