A harrowing case of gang rape as come to light in Bareilly, where a 14-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted by two teenagers, according to a TOI

The incident, which took place on August 3, was made public after a neighbor, who filmed the crime instead of helping, shared the video on social media. The girl's father has accused the police of initially mishandling the case by filing a complaint under a lesser charge.

According to the report, the survivor's father, a burqa shop owner, said his daughter was lured to an abandoned building by his landlord's son and his friend while he was at work.

The assault was recorded by a neighbor. "My daughter stayed quiet out of fear. I learned of the incident from a video recorded by our neighbour, who shared it online instead of helping," the father said.

The survivor has demanded strict punishment for everyone involved, including the person who shot the assault video. "The accused thrashed me and gang-raped me while pointing a knife at me. I want strict punishment for everyone involved, including the person who shot the assault video."

The father alleges that when he first reported the crime, "the sub-inspector altered it and applied lenient sections."

He claims that the police initially registered the FIR under BNS section 75 (sexual harassment) and "did not send his daughter for medical examination at the time."

It was only after the father filed a complaint on the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's grievance portal on Saturday that the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) intervened, TOI further reported. The SSP ordered the addition of rape section and relevant sections of the Pocso Act and a medical examination was subsequently conducted.

Official response

Additional SP Mukesh Mishra has assured an "impartial" investigation.

Meanwhile, station house officer (SHO) Praveen Solanki has denied any negligence, saying, "The incident involved a minor girl and appropriate action was taken based on the father's complaint. After the video appeared online, additional charges were added."
