130 cops, 65 students hurt; 15 FIRs over July 20 protest: Police

New Delhi: As many as 130 police personnel and around 65 students were injured during the July 20 "Sansad Chalo" protest march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament, while 15 FIRs have been registered in connection with the demonstrations, officials said on Saturday.

"With the help of Facial recognition system cameras, Delhi Police is identifying anti-social elements at Jantar Mantar. Police have identified more than 2,000 such people so far who have criminal records and came to Jantar Mantar," police said. On July 20, the situation escalated as tens of thousands joined the "Sansad Chalo" march, following which police erected barricades. Police responded with tear gas and lathi charges, leaving dozens on both sides injured. The crackdown triggered outrage across party lines and led to legal petitions alleging excessive use of force. Police, however, blamed anti-social elements for stone-pelting and instigating violence.

CJP representative Ashutosh Ranka, meanwhile, claimed that the outfit would submit to Delhi Police a list of police personnel who allegedly "cracked open the heads of children, dragged them on the streets, broke the ribs of volunteers and slapped young girls."


Earlier, on July 21, FIRs were registered at Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP Act).
