11 Kerala sanitation women workers pool Rs 25 each to buy Rs 250 lottery, win Rs 10 crore jackpot

In a heartwarming tale of camaraderie and perseverance, 11 women members of Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) in
Kerala have struck gold by winning the first prize of the monsoon bumper lottery, amounting to a staggering Rs 10 crore. As per ToI report, their victory is a result of collective effort, as nine of them pooled Rs 25 each to purchase the ticket worth Rs 250, while the other two shared Rs 12.5 each.

The fortunate women are part of a 57-member HKS group in the Parappanangadi municipality in Malappuram, where they have been collecting non-biodegradable waste from homes and establishments to make a living for the past two-and-a-half years.


Despite their incredible windfall, these determined women expressed their commitment to continue their vocation. They firmly believe that their strength lies in unity and collaboration, which played a pivotal role in their lottery triumph.

The winning ticket was jointly purchased by HKS members P Parvathy, K Leela, MP Radha, M Sheeja, K Chandrika, E Bindu, Karthiyayini, K Shobha, C Baby, C Kuttymalu, and P Lakshmi.

Parvathy, a native of Parappanangadi, recounted that they had no expectations of winning, given that it was the fourth ticket they had purchased together. To their surprise, their luck changed when they discovered that their ticket had clinched the coveted prize, sold by an agency in Palakkad.

Excited about the possibilities, most members plan to utilize the prize money to build homes, fund their children's education, and settle their debts. Baby and Kuttymalu, who couldn't afford a full share, contributed Rs 12.5 each. For many of these hardworking women, the funds come as a much-needed relief from severe financial hardships, some of whom used to walk to the municipality from their homes to save on transportation costs.

Overjoyed and grateful, the triumphant women presented the winning ticket to the Parappanangadi branch of Punjab National Bank. Praising their dedication and sincerity in their work, Parappanangadi municipal chairman Usman A expressed that fortune had rightfully favored this deserving team, who have struggled to make ends meet with unwavering determination.
