The joint platform of 10 central trade unions, barring the RSS-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, announced a year-long agitation, against what it termed anti-worker and anti-national policies of the government, which will culminate in a nationwide strike.

A decision to this effect was taken at the national convention of workers held on Monday which was attended by the trade unions as well as various independent sectoral national federations and associations.

The trade unions have put forth a 14-point charter of demands before the government, seeking scrapping of the labour codes, ending privatisation, raising mandatory work days under the rural employment guarantee scheme to 200 days, while putting an end to contractualisation of workers.

The trade unions include Congress-backed INTUC, Left's CITU and AITUC, and others such as AIUTUC, TUCC, HMS, SEWA, LPF, AICCTU and UTUC.

"We demand that scheme workers be made permanent in government posts with a need-based minimum wage along with a universal government funded social security and pension schemes," the central trade unions said.
