After spending nearly 180 hours trapped beneath the debris of a collapsed under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi, 41 workers are still waiting to be rescued. The current rescue plan, if executed accurately, may take at least another two days.

The workers have been provided with food, water, and essential medicines at regular intervals. Additionally, some of them are being given anti-depressants to help cope with the situation.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who reviewed the rescue operation at the partially collapsed Silkyara tunnel, emphasized the collective responsibility of ensuring the well-being of the trapped workers and their family members. He assured that every possible measure would be taken to save them.

Why rescue operations are failing?

The rescue operation has faced challenges due to the varying soil conditions in the Himalayan region. The soil strata is soft in some areas and hard in others, making mechanical operations difficult. Gadkari highlighted that horizontal drilling with the American auger is currently the fastest method to reach the trapped workers. However, the machine encountered difficulties when it encountered hard obstacles, leading to increased pressure and vibrations. As a safety precaution, the machine was temporarily stopped.

"We are working on six options simultaneously. The PMO is also closely monitoring the operation. Our biggest priority is to save all those who are trapped and as soon as possible. Whatever is needed will be done," Gadkari said.

"We hope that we will reach the trapped workers within the next two days," he said.

Anurag Jain, Union Road Transport Secretary, informed that five different agencies are simultaneously working on multiple options to evacuate the trapped workers.

He elaborated that National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC), and Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) have been assigned one option each.
