Meta has rolled out WhatsApp Channels in India, introducing a novel avenue for communication. WhatsApp Channels, initially unveiled in June, serve as a one-way broadcast tool, enabling administrators to disseminate text, images, videos, stickers, and polls to a wide audience.

The announcement came via a blog post from Meta on September 13, 2023. In this blog post, Meta stated, "Today we have launched WhatsApp Channels in India and will deliver a private way for people to receive updates that matter to them. We're also welcoming some of your favorite celebrities, sports teams, artists, creators, thought leaders that people can follow, right within WhatsApp."

WhatsApp Channels can be accessed through a new tab called 'Updates' on the platform. Users can conveniently locate both Status updates and channels they choose to follow, keeping them separate from their personal conversations with family, friends, and communities.

Several prominent figures, including Katrina Kaif, Diljit Dosanjh, Akshay Kumar, and Vijay Deverakonda, have already unveiled their WhatsApp Channels. Notably, the Indian Cricket Team has also launched its WhatsApp Channel, aligning with the excitement building up around the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

WhatsApp Channels introduces an 'Enhanced Directory' feature, facilitating users in finding channels tailored to their country. Furthermore, users can explore channels that are new, highly active, or popular, based on follower counts.

Within WhatsApp Channels, users can express their reactions using emojis, and the total reaction count is readily visible. Moreover, when users forward an update to their chats or groups, it automatically includes a link back to the original channel, simplifying access for others.

It's important to highlight that following a channel does not disclose the user's phone number to the administrator or other followers. The choice of whom to follow remains entirely private. Additionally, administrators have the option to block screenshots and forwards from their channels. They also retain control over who can follow their channel and whether it should be discoverable in the directory or not.

For those interested in creating their own WhatsApp Channels, here's how to make it:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone and navigate to the Updates tab.
  2. Tap the plus icon (+), and select New channel.
  3. Tap 'Get started' and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Add a channel name to finalize the creation.
  5. Customize your channel by adding a description and an icon.
  6. Finally, tap Create channel, and you're all set.
With the introduction of WhatsApp Channels in India, Meta is paving the way for a dynamic and engaging communication experience, offering a diverse range of content and updates for users across the nation.
