Rhino kills deer in Assam zoo

GUWAHATI: A spotted deer died at the Assam state zoo on Tuesday after it was attacked by a rhinoceros inside their composite enclosure.

The deer, one of the about 60 in the enclosure, was attacked by the lone full grown rhinoceros inside the enclosure yesterday, zoo director Narayan Mahanta said.

The deer sustained serious injury in the stomach and it succumbed today in the course of treatment.

Infighting among the animals in the composite enclosure has become quite common after population of deer increased there, Mahanta said.

The authorities has been contemplating to shift most of them to another enclosure.
