Monkeys get their Onam treat

About a dozen monkeys enjoyed the feast which consisted of fruit and other delicacies served on plantain leaves at Wayanad-Mysore road near Vaithiri.

KALPETTA (Kerala): A group of wild monkeys here had a sumptuous feast on Onam day.

About a dozen monkeys enjoyed the feast which consisted of fruit and other delicacies served on plantain leaves at Wayanad-Mysore road near Vaithiri on Friday.

The staff of Wayanad Gandhigram donated a day's salary to organise the feast.

They have been organising the Onam feast since 2004. Unlike in the past, this time fruit dominated the menu after suggestions from animal rights groups that spicy food could upset the monkeys' stomach.

The menu consisted of banana, pineapple, grapes and sweetened rice.
