Delhi to get CNG crematorium for pets

The CNG crematorium, first of its kind, will come up at Karawal Nagar in north-east Delhi, which would also house a dog hospital.

NEW DELHI: Animal lovers in the capital can now be assured that their four-legged friends would embark on their last journey with respect and dignity as a CNG crematorium for pets and stray dogs is coming up here.

The crematorium, first of its kind, will come up at Karawal Nagar in north-east Delhi on a one-acre plot, which would also house a dog hospital.

"We have received the permission for the construction of the crematorium for which the area has already been identified," said MCD Director (Veterinary Services) R B S Tyagi.

The assessment of the project would be soon done and tenders floated for the same, he added.

Stressing that it would be more economical and hygienic, Tyagi said a CNG-based incinerator would be used at the funeral parlour, which would reduce the body into ashes within 30 minutes. Stray dogs would be cremated for free.

The animals are currently disposed off at sanitary landfill sites. A few electrical crematoriums for animals in the capital are not functioning properly.

The crematorium at the Moti Bagh Veterinary Hospital is one such set up. "We had an electric crematorium, but for last few months it is not working," said Dr Vinita Chopra of the hospital. In such a scenario, it's left to a few NGOs to offer help.
