Bear found dead in Bor

A sloth bear was found dead in Khorikhapa area of Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, 60km from here, on Sunday.

NAGPUR: A sloth bear was found dead in Khorikhapa area of Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, 60km from here, on Sunday.

"The old female bear died due to multiple organ failure after suffering from grievous injuries near thigh and stomach. All the body parts of the animal were intact and hence foul play is not suspected," said SB Bhalavi, divisional forest officer (DFO), Pench.

The bear was first sighted at 5.30pm by forest guard Devidas Dhurve and van majoors who were returning after patrolling. The animal was still alive when the staff saw it. However, on Sunday morning, it was found dead at the same spot. Veterinarian Dr PL Bhisekar from Selu conducted the post-mortem. "We have collected samples of liver, kidney, heart and lungs and will send them for forensic examination on Monday," said Bhalavi.

On January 8, one more bear had died in the farm well of Ramaji Meshram, Salaikala, near New Bor. Death of this bear is shrouded in mystery as no post-mortem was performed and the carcass was disposed off.
