22 held for organising cock fight

TIRUNELVELI (TN): Police arrested 22 persons for organising cockfight, banned on grounds of cruelty, in this district and rescued nine birds.

Police also seized knives, seven motorbikes and mobile phone used by the organisers for the fight and "gamble" at Sankarankoil-Puliangudi Road.

Superintendent of Police Asra Garg said cockfights were horrible and disgusting to see as sharp knives were attached to the legs of the fighting cocks and they 'hack' each other during the fierce fight.

Some times the owners of cock also fight leading to law and order problem. Punters bet money on the cocks, he said.

"The cock fight is nothing inflicting cruelty to the domestic birds. It is banned under prevention of cruelty to animals act," he said.
