CHANDIGARH: In a bid to educate people about animals and birds and to generate empathy towards them, the Haryana government has initiated a new adoption scheme in three of its zoos.

"The main aim of the scheme for adoption of animals/birds is to educate people and to generate love for animals and birds. Interested parties or persons can adopt animals, birds in the three zoos of the state located at Pipli (Kurukshetra), Rohtak and Bhiwani, and in the Deer Park near Dhansu village in Hissar," Haryana's forests and wildlife minister, Ajay Singh Yadav, said here today.

The Sukhomajri-type Joint Forest Management (JFM) which was initiated in the Panchkula district of Haryana in early eighties, had become famous. Buoyed by the success of the scheme, the state government has now decided to seek people's cooperation in protecting and conserving the wildlife wealth of the state, he added.

He said the scheme would help generate fascination, concern and love for wild animals and birds among the people in general, and animal lovers in particular.
