Environmental experts stress on protecting soil along with air, water

The Central University of Punjab on Friday celebrated the World Environment Day on its campus where ideas were exchanged to contain air, water and soil pollution.

BATHINDA: The Central University of Punjab on Friday celebrated the World Environment Day on its campus where ideas were exchanged to contain air, water and soil pollution. Environmental science expert Sunil Mittal said that the university had a mission to contribute in the field of environment protection and improving the health of the residents of Malwa region, which was badly affected due to contamination of water and soil.

Chief executive officer of environment consultancy firm EVAPO Tech, Anil Kumar Singla, said that main cause of contamination of soil was human activities. "Waste produced from human activities has endangered the quality of soil resulting into serious health problems in the region," he said. He expressed concern over the excessive use of fertilizers by Punjab farmers for growing crops and stressed on the need to use caution in using such chemical nutrients.Dean of CUP school of environmental sciences Professor A K Jain emphasized upon the need to promote organic farming. Prof R C Sharma, head, school of environmental sciences said that promoting the use of cow-dung cakes, vermin compost and green manure was the need of the hour.
