Calf, mother elephant rescued from 20-foot deep well
An elephant and its one-year-old calf were rescued from a 20-foot deep well in an Estate at Kothagiri in Nilgiris district.
The villagers in the area heard the animals trumpeting from the well in Kokkode estate and saw the elephant trying to push its calf, which was drowning, up. They managed to put some stones and wooden planks into the well, to help the calf stand and immediately informed the forest department.
Forest officials removed the sidewall of the 20 feet deep well, with an earthmover, and created a pathway for the animals to come up and rescued both the mother and calf, department officials said.
