Vans to raise awareness about adverse effects of crop burning

CHANDIGARH: Punjab's agriculture department in collaboration with Petroleum Conservation Research Association today flagged off two vans to educate farmers about the ill-effects of crop residue burning.

These vans will operate till November, showing videos on management techniques, and will distribute literature in all districts and all blocks of the state, an official spokesperson said.

The officers of agriculture department will accompany the vans and make them aware about the management options for crop residue.


These vans will raise awareness about the ill-effects of crop residue burning especially paddy straw.

Additional Chief Secretary (Development) M P Singh said the state government is also organising camps to sensitise farmers about management options for residue.

He said efforts are being made to provide various residue management implements on subsidy to the farmers.

He appealed them not to burn the paddy straw in the ensuing harvesting season given its harmful effects on environment, human and animal health.
