NGT directs MPCB to take stern action against industries violating norms in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Talegaon belt

Industries located in the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Talegaon belt will have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each if they are found discharging effluents and contaminating water of river Indrayani.

PUNE: Industries located in the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Talegaon belt will have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each if they are found discharging effluents and contaminating water of river Indrayani.

The National Green Tribunal bench in Pune has directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to take stern action that goes beyond mere directions or forfeiture of bank guarantees and ensures such penalty and actual closure of the polluting industries.

The tribunal has also directed the Alandi Municipal Corporation (AMC) to implement a time-bound phased action plan for treatment and processing of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated by the pilgrim town of Alandi. Close to 1 lakh people visit Alandi every fortnight and take a dip in holy river Indrayani.

The NGT's directions are part of a judgment on October 1 in a plea against pollution of Indryani waters due to absence of MSW treatment and processing plant and discharge of effluents by industries and local sources like dharmashalas and marriage halls.
