MCD to generate power from waste
The MCD has worked out a Rs 170 crore investment plan for removal and segregation of municipal solid waste from which power could be generated.
This was announced by Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra at a seminar 'Collection, Segregation and Transportation of Waste -- Cool Earth Initiative' organised by ASSOCHAM.
"A Rs 170 crore worth investment plan has already been worked out by the MCD for removal and segregation of municipal solid waste through which power could be generated on the model currently in practice in Bangalore," Mehra said.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Environment Secretary J K Dadoo said that for generating power, three plants for conversion of solid waste into refuse drive fuel has been authorised by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.
The plants identified for the purpose are Timarpur, Okhla and Ghazipur, he said, adding the plant at Okhla is expected to produce 16 MW of power while Ghazipur plant is expected to produce 10 MW.
The Delhi government is also conducting training for ragpickers and providing safety equipments to them to effectively handle the waste generated from households, he added.
