PUNE: The Indrayani river, which flows along the northern boundary of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits , is facing increasing pollution due to the discharge of untreated effluents in the river from the Pimpri Chinchwad township and other nearby areas.

Vikas Patil, president of the Indrayani Bachav Kruti Samiti, said, “The river is heavily polluted due to the industrial effluents and domestic sewage dumped into the river by the towns and cities along the river. This has led to rampant growth of water hyacinth in the river; this needs to be removed. The local self-government bodies need to take steps to treat the domestic effluents before releasing them into the river .” Last month, the civic body initiated a drive to remove the water hyacinth in the Indrayani river, but only after the Samiti highlighted the problem.
