GHTP lowest SPM emitting thermal power plant in India

Punjab-based Guru Hargobind Thermal Power Plant has achieved a distinction of being a power plant with the lowest emission of SPM for the second consecutive year.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab-based Guru Hargobind Thermal Power Plant has achieved a distinction of being a power plant with the lowest emission of suspended particulate matter for the second-consecutive year, among all 34 such facilities in India.

Located at Bathinda, SPM emission of unit-1 of GHTP has been 21-54mg/Nm3 and of unit-2 at 22-89 mg/Nm3 in 2005-06. The same has been 25-87 mg/Nm3 for unit-1 and 30-59 mg/Nm3 for unit-2 in 2006-07, Punjab State Electricity Board Chairman Y S Ratra said in a release.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has fixed emission limit of 150 mg per Newton cubic metre (mg/Nm3).

Ratra said that in spite of high ash content coal received at thermal plants, the emission levels are kept well below the pollution control norms and the distinction has been achieved due to best operation and maintenance practices adopted at the plant.

He further disclosed that Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant, Ropar has been awarded ISO certification (ISO9001-2000) in December 2007.
