Eco-housing for Mumbai
MUMBAI: Mumbai will soon have 'Eco Friendly Houses', so as to regulate the rapid and large scale housing constructions in the city.

"The programme will be implemented with the help of BMC for construction and redevelopment of residential buildings in Mumbai," Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said in a written reply to MLC Jainuddin Javheri's question in the State Legislative Council.

However, the implementation would be voluntary, Deshmukh added.

Under the eco-housing initiatives, builders need to fulfill the criteria of environmental architecture, water and energy conservation, solid waste management, use of solar energy, rain-water harvesting, sewerage processing units and tree plantation for the houses to be built, he added.

The State Government is also seeking legal opinion to introduce rating system for completing the above criteria and special concessions would be offered in development fees and property tax, Deshmukh said.
