NEW DELHI: Delhi government has decided to do away with stopping motorists to check pollution levels of vehicles and instead rely on remote sensing technology for the task.

"This is an initiative to make Delhi pollution free without interrupting the motorists. We will use remote sensing technology to check the pollution level of all types of vehicles without stopping them on the road," state transport minister Arvinder Singh told reporters.

Singh, who was impressed by a demonstration made before him in this regard, said remote sensing technology measures vehicular pollution with cent per cent accuracy through ultra-violet rays and ultra-sonic waves.

"In addition to pollution, vehicle speed and vehicle picture is also recorded in the computer system. Picture of the vehicles will also help the department in enforcing rules against overloading of vehicles with passengers and/or goods which effect road safety," he added.
