CPCB advocates zero discharge by industries

The CPCB has strongly advocated for zero discharge by industrial units which are polluting rivers in the country and asked the scientific community to find ways for pollution-free river waters.

NAGPUR: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has strongly advocated for zero discharge by industrial units which are polluting rivers in the country and asked the scientific community to find ways for pollution-free river waters.

Addressing inaugural session of an International Conference on Recent Trends in Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Chairman of CPCB J M Mauskar said it is for the scientist fraternity to discuss the issue and achieve a breakthrough.

Industrialists would not favour such a technology, Mauskar added.

Mauskar said that there is a need for regional approach to avoid stress on ecological systems like cascading hydro-electric projects in river basin, large power installations in areas like Korba and Singrauli or small scale units of dye and bulk drug units in Vapi, Ankleshwar pockets of Gujarat.

Chairman Expert Appraisal Committee (Industry) Ministry of Environment and Forest Dr T S Vijayaraghavan delivered key-note address while acting Director of NEERI Dr T Chakrabarti and Dean Jakson State University, Jackson Mississippi (US), Mark Hardy were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Started in 1970 with river valley projects, EIA's scope has been widened over a period of time. It had been made mandatory for the first time in January 1994, with Rs 100 crore as financial threshold of requirement of prior environment clearance, Mauskar stated.
