Bio-medical waste plagues NCR
Delhi may have finally been able to deal with its bio-medical waste but the national capital region (NCR) is lagging far behind in managing its waste.
In a survey carried out by the health committee of ASSOCHAM, it was found that NCR lacks proper medical waste facilities and as the private health sector in satellite towns is growing by leaps and bounds, vast quantum of bio-medical waste is being produced and disposed off in extremely unhygienic ways. Gurgaon is disposing off about 600 tonnes of bio-medical waste per annum, followed closely by Ghaziabad which is disposing off 500 tonnes of waste annually. Faridabad is producing and disposing off about 350 tonnes of bio-medical waste annually.
Segregation and collection facilities for medical and clinical waste have been totally neglected not only in case of Noida and Gurgaon but also in other townships of Ghaziabad, Meerut, Faridabad, Mathura and even Agra,'' said D S Rawat, general secretary, ASSOCHAM.
The study estimates that there are about 780 large and medium hospitals in the NCR and about 4,600 nursing homes. Had there been enough government hospitals here, there could have been a better system of bio-medical waste management. Private hospitals are however, not taking care of this aspect at all,'' said an ASSOCHAM official.
