16 'polluting' units in Ahmedabad get closure notices

Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued closure notices to 16 industrial units in the city for not observing norms to check pollution and ignoring the notices issued to them in the past several months.

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued closure notices to 16 industrial units in the city for not observing norms to check pollution and ignoring the notices issued to them in the past several months. One of these units is Sagar Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd at Kathwada that is owned by Rohit Patel, the recently appointed president of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI).

This has come as a major setback for Rohit Patel after his recent elevation in the GCCI. Sources in the GPCB said that Sagar Drugs & Pharmaceuticals had been served notice to close the unit in 15 days or else power supply will be cut off as per the law.

"The unit had done reverse boring and was releasing polluted water in the land. This was contaminating the groundwater. Power supply to 14 other units in Naroda, Narol, Vatva, Kathwada, Singarva has already been discontinued as they had failed to take action despite repeated notices,'' said a source in the GPCB.
