TNAU to study impact of global warming on India agriculture

The project would provide a scientific platform for institutes to initiate research on mitigating the negative impacts of global warming on Indian agriculture, particular rice.

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has initiated an inter-continental collaborative research along with Norwegian Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Research Bioforsk and International Pacific Research Centre University of Hawaii, US.

The project, financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway, would provide a scientific platform for these institutes to initiate research on mitigating the negative impacts of global warming on Indian agriculture, particular rice.

It would assess behaviour of the Indian monsoon in different climate scenarios, its impact on water availability and rice crop production in different meteorological subdivisions of India, a TNAU release said today.

The project would identify necessary cropping and adaptation mechanism so as to address the issues of climate vulnerabilities in rice production. The joint effort would also lead to the identification and implementation of integrated adaptation strategies to sustain rice productivity under changing climatic conditions, it said.
