Saran is PM's envoy on climate change

Shyam Saran, the PM's special envoy on the nuclear deal, will now double up as his special envoy on climate change.

NEW DELHI: Shyam Saran, the PM's special envoy on the nuclear deal, will now double up as his special envoy on climate change.

This will be in addition to Saran's responsibilities on the nuclear deal, which at this stage includes rallying support for exemption for India among the NSG countries.

This appointment has a significance far beyond the fact that Saran happens to be PM's favourite. It has to do with several things. First, there is a growing convergence between the nuclear deal and climate change. The government has been working on the argument that the nuke deal is important for India and good for the world because it addresses the issue of climate change.

While the December 2007 deliberations in Bali generated a lot of heat, the government believes it has only
set the pace for highly contested negotiations over the next two years that Saran would now lead.

The deliberations will conclude with the global climate meet in Copenhagen in November 2009.
