Maharashtra sets up committee for warming

The committee would handle various issues related to global warming and its effect on public life. It will also give directives and suggestions to various departments.

NAGPUR: Taking cognizance of several warnings on global warming at international level, Maharashtra Government has formed a high-level committee to deal with the issue.

"A high-level committee has been formed, headed by chief minister Ashok Chavan, to tackle the effects of global warming," environment minister Ganesh Naik informed the Legislative Council in a written reply.

The committee would handle various issues related to global warming and its effect on public life. It will also give directives and suggestions to various government departments including urban development, public works, health and forests, Naik said.

The Centre issued a notification in 2006 defining the norms for construction field considering the intensity of global warming in next 25 years.

The State Government strictly follows these norms defined by the Centre, the minister said.

The issue of global warming was raised by Deepak Sawant (Shiv Sena). He asked if the state government had made any provision to deal with increasing hazards of global warming.
