India recognizing the effects of Climate change: US

WASHINGTON: India which has started recognizing the effects of climate change is working in this regard, but has not moved as far as China, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu has said.

"India is starting to move. They're not as far along in China. But it is remarkable," Chu told the CNN in an interview. A Noble prize winner in physics in 1997, Chu is soon heading to India to hold a series of talks with his Indian counterparts on a wide range of issues.

Chu, who believes that a shift from fossil fuel is necessary to combat global warming, said in his discussions with representatives from India, they are also recognizing the effects of climate change.

"They also recognize that when they grow old and new infrastructure, this infrastructure has to be -- it's to their advantage that this infrastructure -- the new buildings with both residential and businesses and their industries have to be the most energy efficient possible," Chu said.

For China, Chu said it is investing incredibly heavy in cleaning up its energy sector. "I talked with Premier Wen about two months ago. And he said, "If we continue like business as usual, the effect on China and the world would be devastating. Therefore, we have to move very aggressively."
