Climate Change plan before June: PM

The PM, responding in Rajya Sabha to a question, said that the government was finalising a National Action Plan on issues arising out of climate change.

NEW DELHI: The PM, responding in Rajya Sabha to a question raised by agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan, said that the government was finalising a National Action Plan on issues arising out of climate change.

Swaminathan wanted to know whether the government was drawing up contingency plans to deal with the impact of environment change on specific crops like potato and wheat.

The nominated MP said there was a need for crop-specific and region-specific plans to deal with the impact of climate change.

Minister of State for Environment and Forests N N Meena said the report of an expert committee working under the guidance of the PM's Council on Climate Change would submit its report before June.

Meena said the PM had directed the Agriculture Ministry and the Planning Commission to prepare a comprehensive plan to deal with the impact of climate change on foodgrain production.
