PUDUCHERRY: In a novel demonstration to highlight the need to protect the ozone layer, 10 youth of a local Non Governmental Organisation here ran backwards for 10 km through the main streets of the city.

The participants are members of the Puducherry based Mangrove Forest Development and Protection Society, championing the cause of protection of the environment and also ecological balance.

They commenced their programme on Sunday from near Gandhi statue on Beach Road here and covered 10 km, running through important segments in and around the town, a spokesman of the society told reporters.

He said that the object of the programme was to generate awareness among people on the need to protect the ozone layer.

The society had in the past carried out massive planting of saplings in Thengaithittu, a coastal village here. Mangrove saplings were planted through this programme.
