CHANDIGARH: In a good news for the endangered species of vulture, the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre in Pinjore has achieved a rare feat wherein a vulture chick has crossed the age of 55 days after its parents nested in captivity.

Vibhu, the 55-day-old vulture nestling, has become the world's first to survive that long after being born to vultures who nested in captivity, State Forest and Environment Minister Kiran Choudhry said on Wednesday.

"There were four white-backed vulture nests, one of which now has a 55-days old nestling. The nestling is showing good growth and is expected to fledge in another 45 days," Choudhry told reporters.

The Centre at Pinjore is a collaborative project of Haryana Forest Department and Bombay Natural History Society and is leading the vulture conservation efforts in the country.

"This pair of white-backed vultures from Haryana has laid an egg for the third consecutive year, in 2005-06, the egg did not hatch and during 2006-07, their one month old nestling died in the nest. Now, we are hopeful the pair's new born will fledge successfully and grow into a fine young white-backed vulture adult," Choudhry said about the parent vultures.

The incubation period of white-backed vulture is 55 days and the young lives in the nest for about 100 days, the minister informed.

The Vulture Breeding Centre at Pinjore was set up in the 2001 as Vulture Care Centre with funding from the UK's Darwin's Initiative for Survival of Species fund.

In response to a question, Choudhry said veterinary use of Diclofenac Sodium had been banned in the state.
