Woman held for having 114 tortoises

HOWRAH: Railway Police Force apprehended a woman passenger with 114 tortoises in her possession travelling in down Dehradun-Howrah Doon Express.

RPF sources said the woman, who claimed she was from Mughalsarai, was apprehended during routine check as the train rolled into Howrah station.

The tortoises, most of them small, were packed in a polythene bag.

The woman was handed over to the GRP and forest officials called to hand over the tortoises.

A month ago a large number of tortoises, some of them dead, were recovered from a drain at Tikiapara station, a little distance from Howrah station and is suspected to have either fallen off while being taken to Kolkata or dumped fearing police check.
