Warrant against Aamir in Chinkara case
The Gujarat forest department has handed an arrest warrant against actor Aamir Khan -- for allegedly filming chinkaras while shooting for 'Lagaan' -- to the Mumbai police.

Aamir and the others facing arrest -- director Ashutosh Gowarikar, Aamirs ex-wife Reena Dutta, cameraman Anil Mehta and executive B Shrinivas Rao -- have been accused of violating the Wildlife Protection Act. The animals used in the film, eight years ago, had later died. Aamir was the producer of the film.
A forest department team handed over the warrants to an IG of Mumbai police, sources said. It is likely that they will be arrested or surrender anytime after April 15, they added. Public prosecutor Vipul Pathak told TOI that the prosecution would seek custody of all the accused, including Aamir.
The case was lodged by assistant conservator of forests J V Vyas after Aamir and others failed to respond to the forest departments notices in the last two years, asking them to appear before it. On a complaint by Gir Nature Youth Club, Aamir Khan Production Pvt Ltd was served a notice on August 7, 2006 for the alleged illegal use of chinkaras in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.
During a departmental inquiry, forest department guard Amrutlal said that both the chinkaras were arranged by forest officials, though the film units request for the same had been rejected by Gujarat's chief conservator of forests. Amrutlal said one chinkaras was taken from the premises of the forest department near Lotus Colony in Bhuj while the second was brought from its Mochirai nursery.
