LUCKNOW: In a first of its kind project in the country, TERI, Global Tiger Forum and UP forest department will assess the carbon stock of Dudhwa tiger reserve. The project has been approved and will run for two years.

The carbon stock is the carbon stored in the forest, biomass and even the dead wood and leaves and can be traded for money.

"The survey would also help us in assessing the amount of carbon stock that would be available in Dudhwa tiger reserve after five years,” said TERI director JV Sharma. The fund for the survey has been sanctioned by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

The money generated by trading the carbon stock might be distributed among dwellers dependent on forest. This, in turn, would encourage them to conserve forest, said forest officials.
