Two rhinos killed in sanctuary

Two rhinos have been shot dead by poachers inside the Orang wildlife sanctuary in lower Assam, forest official said.

GUWAHATI: Two rhinos have been shot dead by poachers inside the Orang wildlife sanctuary in lower Assam, forest official said.

The rhinos were shot dead last week by poachers but prompt response by the forest guards prevented them from extracting the horns, Divisional Forest Officer M Momin said.

"Alerted by the gun shots, the guards cornered the poachers but they managed to escape under cover of darkness", Momin added.

He said based on vital lead, the officials were hopeful about apprehending the gang from nearby villages.
