NEW DELHI: In the midst of concern over dwindling number of tigers, the carcass of a predator was found in the buffer area of Corbett National Park in Uttarkhand by forest officials -- with the animal being a victim of suspected poisoning.

Though the exact cause of the death of the tigress is yet to be ascertained, preliminary investigations show the predator has died due to poisoning by villagers in Ram Nagar forest division which is a buffer area of the Corbett reserve.

"The villagers were angry at the tigress who in the past few days had attacked them," Ramesh Pandey, an official with the Wildlife Crime Control Board (WCCB), said.

He said state officials have been asked to give a detailed report including post-mortem report of the animal, to identify the reason behind the death.
